Steve Wilhite, inventor of the GIF format while at Compuserve in the 1980s, was honored at the Webby’s this year with a lifetime achievment award. The acceptance speech he gave should put to rest a debate that has been raging for quite some time on the internet: is Mr. Wilhite’s format pronounced with a ‘hard G’ or a ‘soft G’?
